What you Missed While Ann said Bad Words

Filed in National by on March 4, 2007

I hate Ann Coulter. (Hube, that means I give her a 1 out of 10). There are, indeed, words that describe her, but the best one is on my “never use” list.

What Ann did for Mitt Romney was provide cover fire. The disgrace is not really that Ann Followed him with a typical screed, but that now we all seem to forget who introduced Romney. This is way more telling than who followed him. He chose who would introduce him. This decision is a way to set the tone for the BS that will follow. He chose Grover Norquist.

If you haven’t been following his illustrious career, here are some of the highlights:

  • The Contract on America
  • Jack Abramoff
  • George W Bush
  • David Safavian
  • The philosophy that caused our current budget deficit

Grover is also noted for this quote:

I don’t want to abolish government. I simply want to reduce it to the size where I can drag it into the bathroom and drown it in the bathtub.

He’s a real sweetheart. I think this speaks volumes more about the judgment of Mitt Romney. This was a signal to his conservative base. And it should be a signal to the rest of the country that if Mitt is elected President, we are in for 4 more years of what we have already had 6 of.

See Grover and a bunch of other Republicans spazzing out at CPAC.

If you have a slow home connection here is what you are missing:

Tom Tancredo fanatics lose their cool when asked about connection between race and immigration, then try to conceal their neo-Confederate paraphenalia.

A curiously pale black Republican explains why black Republicans can’t get elected.

Bob Barr, Grover Norquist and “Flipper,” the anti-Romney dolphin, discuss the conservative movement.

Plus Coulter gets called out for her public support of the “sanctity” of marriage, but her private defilment of the institution.

  3. Mike Protack says:

What Coulter said was a big mistake for CPAC and for what it is worth Grover Norquist is not a big factor in DC these days.

The philosophy that has given us deficits is spending at 2-3 times the inflation rate.

  4. After the dinner, journalist/happy warrior Joel Mowbray quipped to me:

“At left-wing conferences, you leave hating America. At right-wing conferences, you leave loving America.”

That’s exactly how I felt at the end of the dinner after shaking the hands of the disabled vets who came by crutch and wheelchair from Walter Reed to spend a few hours at CPAC.
    ***

this is from Michelle Malkin today.

Grover Norquist’s prominance at CPAC belies your statement Mike, his legal troubles keep him low profile, perhaps, like Rove.

  5. So, do I get to tie every Democratic Presidential candidate to everything that’s ever been said by anyone who attends YearlyKos?

  6. Dr. Nick says:

Malkin and Coulter are right wing heros. They are at the very core of the combative, divisive, toxic thing that the GOP has become.

Romney basked in the Coulter endorsment for about a minute befor it blew up in his face.

The good news in all of this is that I think it is clear from the reaction that America has had it with the Coulter/Romney style politics of division and hatred.

  7. You’re soooo right. People should condemn the Romney campaign for this bigoted, hate-filled statement:

“The statement was offensive. Governor Romney believes all people should be treated with dignity and respect.”

    Shame on him.

  8. Sorry, Dr. Nick. You’re crazy enough, but you’re still not in Jason’s complete lunatic league yet. I guess I’m not quite used to his disappearing act yet.

  9. doctornick says:

If you lay down with pigs…

Nobody made Romney share a stage with Coulter.

  10. Actually, yes, they did. Romney was scheduled before Coulter. If he wanted to speak to the conference, that’s when he had to do it.

“If you lay down with pigs…”

Are you talking about you, Jason and LG?…..

  11. liberalgeek says:

ha. I have to take issue with 2 things, and I’m ignoring the pig joke.

Norquist may be out of vogue among the power brokers in DC these days, but that should raise a flag right there. Perhaps Mitt longs for the old days when Grover was ascendant. Perhaps Mitt loves him despite the fact he is not cool. Either way, that concerns me way more than the evil bitch.

The Norquist theory of constantly cutting taxes is a huge contributing factor in our deficit. To say that it is only a function of out of control spending is wrong. Also, I believe that Grover WANTS the deficit to be out of control, so that he can prove that the federal government is inefficient.

Finally, you will not hear me saying that there is a huge link between Coulter and Romney, but I do liken this to the time that there were reports widely distributed that the liberals at Wellstones memorial booed some Republican that came on. The fact that a few people took a poke at a Republican did not mean that the memorial was a partisan event, yet Faux news and the rest of the MSM grabbed it and held on. The Conservatives, including Romney, laughed at her joke. Is it fair that they get painted with that brush? Probably not, but if a liberal at YearlyKos calls Lindsey Graham a faggot, I’ll be right there with you in condemning the speaker.

  12. anon says:

if a liberal at YearlyKos calls Lindsey Graham a faggot, I’ll be right there with you in condemning the speaker.

Of course, if somebody calls him a “cracker,” that would be a tougher call to make.

  13. anon says:

Somehow John McCain did not think that sharing a stage with Coulter was mandatory. I guess I might be getting Clintonian about the word the word “made” means but nobody “made” Romney share a stage with Coulter.

  14. Mike Protack says:

FYI- Norquist has no legal troubles but some of his friends do.

The silly comment “Contract on America” is a bit tired. For those who trash the Contract, try reading it.

The actions of the GOP in the last few years were indeed weak and in some ways corrupt and they deserved to lose the House.

  15. liberalgeek says:

The Contract on America is apt.

Like Lincoln, our first Republican president, we intend to act “with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right.” To restore accountability to Congress. To end its cycle of scandal and disgrace. To make us all proud again of the way free people govern themselves.

Seems to me that Newt was providing cover fire for the gutting that was about to take place, wittingly or not.

    Or this gem:

    3. THE PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY ACT: Discourage illegitimacy and teen pregnancy by prohibiting welfare to minor mothers and denying increased AFDC for additional children while on welfare, cut spending for welfare programs, and enact a tough two-years-and-out provision with work requirements to promote individual responsibility.

Seems to me to be a contract on some of our most vulnerable citizens.

And how did this one work out?

    1. THE FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY ACT: A balanced budget/tax limitation amendment and a legislative line-item veto to restore fiscal responsibility to an out- of-control Congress, requiring them to live under the same budget constraints as families and businesses.

There are certainly things in there that make sense, but it was not all hearts and flowers.

As for Super-Grover, this is from wikipedia:

Norquist denies that he has done anything wrong. His close association with Abramoff has definitely hurt his reputation.[10] Whether Norquist could face criminal charges, in addition to civil actions against ATR for violating its non-profit charter, is unclear.

So no wonder he has kept a low-profile.

  16. Y’all know that Newt has A NEW CONTRACT?

oh yeah, at his website is the newest version for this century….yippee
I have’nt poured through it yet but I will offer it up for DE Libs to digest as they might…

    Newt has A NEW CONTRACT

Yeah, I was just reading that on your site.

    The Contract On America (CON).

That oughtta cement Newt’s legacy as the Alpha Wingnut.
