May 1st, 2008 by DavidAnderson
WILMINGTON - A day prior to delivering the keynote address at the Republican State Convention, Hockessin resident John Clatworthy declared he is running for the Fourth State Senate District seat, soon to be vacated by State Senator Charlie Copeland.
“It’s time to make Delaware first again,” said Clatworthy. “I will represent the 4th District by bringing my business experience, leadership abilities and vision to Legislative Hall. I plan to work vigorously to strengthen our economy, by promoting pro-business policies that will bring more jobs to our state and to reform our tax structure, making taxes lower, fewer and fairer.”
Clatworthy, the son of Ray and Judy Clatworthy, was raised in Dover. A strong supporter of public education, Clatworthy attended Caesar Rodney High School and the University of Delaware, receiving a business degree in Marketing and Finance. He then received his MBA from Regent University with a concentration in entrepreneurship. He and his wife, Stephanie, have been married ten years and have three children, ages 6, 4, and 3.
“As a parent with children in our public schools, I am dedicated to ensuring that Delaware’s children receive a first-rate education and that parents are empowered to help their children achieve and flourish academically.” Clatworthy said.
For the past 11 years Clatworthy has been employed at Wilmington Savings Fund Society, where he is a Senior Vice President within the ATM division. When he joined WSFS, the bank operated 14 ATMs. Under Clatworthy’s leadership and entrepreneurial initiatives, the bank now services approximately 10,000 ATMs nationwide.
Clatworthy has been an engaged public servant for most of his adult life. He has actively mentored an elementary age boy for over 4 years. He served as a trustee for Delaware Youth for Christ, which helps “at risk” youth in the Wilmington area and has chaired the Delaware Leadership Prayer Breakfast.
John has been active politically for 15 years. Delaware Today Magazine profiled him on the cover as a future political leader. Clatworthy serves on the Executive Committee for the Delaware Republican State Committee. He has served as Chairman of the Christiana Millcreek Republican region. Currently, he is Chairman of the Defining a Winning Agenda team for the Delaware Republican Party. Under his leadership, a team comprised of a few dozen citizens from across the state, crafted a plan to move Delaware forward by offering a vision for positive change. Clatworthy will outline The Delaware Plan at the Republican State Convention Friday night, delivering the keynote address.

Yet ANOTHER great candidate who has integrity, vision, and a great opportunity to serve as our State Senator. He has my vote without a doubt! It keeps getting BETTER and BETTER!
Amen.
John has set a wonderful example for young people who want to be active in the Republican Party. Despite having a great family name for politics (his father ran for Senate in 2002 against Joe Biden), John has built a resume that stands alone.
What’s Dallas Winslow up to?
This is great for the State of Delaware. A solid, experienced candidate who will look out for the best interests of the State’s residents.
Three words - “He’s the man.”
