Well what do you know - hippie chicks are STILL hot.
It was pretty clear which side had at least some compliment of adult membership (and most likely leadership as well).

Well, yeah. You had out of town right-wing radio talk show hosts leading their geezer audience to the center of a college town. What did you expect?
Looks like it’s getting worse.
I would support Senator James Inhofe (OKlahome) and Senator Jim Demint (South Carolina), to pull the earmarks from Berkeley and give the funding to the Marines (Semper Fi Act 2008).

The words “We Support Our Troops” have no substance when they come from folks like this.
I would like to see our Legislature condemn the actions of the City of Berkeley.
It’s one thing to protest the war and administration policies, it’s another to protest the fine men and women who defend this country at the pleasure of the President and Congress….all of whom were elected by the people.
The Marines only carry out the orders of those that have been “elected by the people”, period. They are also essential to the common defense of the US.
One of the primary functions of the federal government is to provide for the common defense. The Marine Corps works to that end admirably, and to continue its mission, it must recruit. Any city that would attempt to impede that federal function should not receive federal funds in return.
If McCain, Paul, Huckabee, Clinton, or Obama were elected as President, do you think the Marines would disobey their orders? I think not!!!
I think Berkeley should call DeMint’s bluff. First of all, we are all against earmarks anyway, right? After the earmarks are pulled, the debate can continue on its merits. Most of the $2 million DeMint wants to pull is for UC anyway, not the City of Berkeley.
Besides, next fall, California’s Asian-American voters will just love to be reminded that McCain’s party opposed funding for cataloguing Matsui’s papers.
Not exactly a bluff. S.2596 has been submitted.

I doubt that one city will affect the outcome of an election.
I doubt that one city will affect the outcome of an election.
We are not talking about one city. We are talking about the Congressional papers of a Japanese survivor of a US internment camp, who is a hero to Asian-Americans throughout California. DeMint is proposing to pull funding for UC’s project to catalog Mitsui’s papers (somehow DeMint must think UC is responsible for Code Pink and the Berkeley Council). The slight will not be forgotten when the campaign comes.
Personally, I would love to see those papers published as I do like history, especially military history.
If you really want those papers published as I do, then you would tell those protestors to direct their protests at the adminstration instead of using the Marine Recruiting center as a pawn to express their displeasure of the war.
Direct the protests at the proper people.
Direct the protests at the proper people.
… said the guy who wants to penalize UC for the actions of the Berkeley Council and some private protesters.
“The slight will not be forgotten when the campaign comes.”
Please. You think the Dem nominee will be playing that card in a state they’re almost guaranteed to win anyway?
And if you want the papers published, then the University and Matsui’s supporters can pay for it without an earmark.
Agreed. The papers should be archived by private funds raised from the Japanese American community, with detailed fundraising letters explaining exactly what happened and why their contribution is needed.
Then Berkeley should tell DeMint to go pound sand.

“The papers should be archived by private funds raised from the Japanese American community, with detailed fundraising letters explaining exactly what happened and why their contribution is needed.”
Above, you said “we all hate earmarks.” Methinks you don’t hate them so much. You’re acting as if the earmark is something that should happen and if it’s no longer there something “happened” to it.
From nomans responses I take it he supports “Code Pink”.
The same group who protested at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where our wounded troops are.
Below is an excerpt from wikipedia. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medea_Benjamin )
Many of the causes that Ms. Benjamin espouses are Communist in nature. The Washington “peace” rally at which she spoke last month, for instance, was organized by the Workers World Party, a Communist organization… In years past, she staunchly opposed US military aid to those fighting against Communist forces in Central America… She favors the creation of a government-sponsored universal health care system funded by taxpayer dollars. She exhorts the US government to lift its trade embargo against Cuba – a nation she notably lauds as a place where people have managed to “thrive despite the odds” against them.[6][7]
I also agree with lifting the embargo on cuba becuase once the people there have prosperity the social systsem will change. Diaz-Ballard who always kills the proposal in the senate is related to castro and knows that that embargo keeps castro in power.
Brian…I agree with your assessment. Once there is prosperity there, the social system would change. That would be a good reason to lift the embargo.
I provided the reference to Medea Benjamin in wikipedia, as an informational reference. I just thought that there might be another motive behind this protest so I went looking for more information on “Code Pink” and who was behind it.
